The best foundation and the right techniques for applying them.
Foundation is the secret to a polished face, if it is done right. Choosing the best coverage and applying it artfully is what sets apart professional makeup artists from the rest of us. If you walk through any department store, you realize that finding the perfect foundation is equivalent of snagging the perfect-fitting jeans.
The correct shade:
Try as many shades and formulas as you need to get the one that works best for you. Some department stores will give out trial sizes; look at the samples on your face in natural light. The best shade is the one that fades into your skin, and disappears, just like magic.
Smooth moves:
Proper application is crucial to a natural look. Use a foundation brush with short, waxy bristles to work liquid or lightweight cream deeply into the skin. (Try Glo foundation brush, $33) For powder foundation, use a fiber-optic brush, which is big and fluffy for subtle coverage. (Jane Iredale chisel powder brush, $24)
Make it last:
Foundation always lasts longer if you moisturize properly before applying it. Start with your moisturizer, then smooth on foundation, follow by a light application of loose powder.
Get a glow:
If your skin tends to be sallow, a light reflecting formula foundation will give a subtle, dewy sheen to your skin. These products contain tiny reflective particles that give you a natural glow without looking greasy. (Try Clarins True Comfort Foundation Light Reflecting SPF 15, $36)
In the pink:
If you use a cream blush, apply it while the foundation is still slightly wet. This makes it blend into the skin deeper and more smoothly.
First up: Eyes
When applying make up, do the eyes first. If you make a mistake, you can do a quick fix without having to redo the entire face.
Less is more:
If your foundation seems a bit heavy, mix it with a few drops of moisturizer for more natural coverage. Or try a lightweight tinted moisturizer instead.
